Mount Agung volcano eruption in Bali

I was peacefully editing a client video at my beachfront guesthouse in Amed, in Bali’s far east, when all of a sudden one of the staff members came and excitedly told me the volcano was erupting.

I quickly ran out and saw this:

At this exact moment the sun was beaming through the smoke, lighting it up these crazy orange and pink hues, making it look even more spectacular!

I had already been planning to shoot the full moon rising at sunset that night and now this volcano just became the star of the show!

So I grabbed my camera gear and went straight to the black sand beach outside my accomodation and shot photos and video of the grey ash and the warm coloured sky until the sun had set.

I got a couple of shots of the full moon and was almost going to pack up when I noticed a faint glow at the top of the volcano which wasn’t visible during daylight.

So I set up and took some long exposure shots – and that is when the magic really happened!

It was a perfect storm for photography that night because the full moon which was rising behind the camera illuminated the ash coming out the top of the volcano.

Was the Bali volcano eruption dangerous?

Locals said this was the biggest Mount Agung had erupted since the previous year when there were evacuations across the area.

The active volcano is known to stir from time to time but it hasn’t had a major eruption since 1963, when more than 1000 people were killed.

While the ash from the eruption caused plane delays for travellers, locals said they weren’t worried about the eruption because this was small compared to what they’d seen in the past.

Here is a little video I made on the night for social media.
